Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A 100-page report into the future of the Iveco Ford plant at Langley, commissioned by two local borough councils, warns that the plant could be in jeopardy after 1992.

The report, by the Centre for Alternative Industrial and Technological Systems, warns; "The future of the Langley site and its workforce becomes conditional on far-reaching corporate decisions by Ford and Iveco decisions which are being made now."

Decisions will be needed on the replacement for the Iveco Ford Cargo, the future of the joint venture between the companies, the control of the company, likely future strength of the European truck market, and the effects of the creation of the SEM, says CAITS, which is part of the Polytechnic of North London.

It warns that Iveco is taking an increasingly dominant role in the company, and that the Langley plant could be downgraded to a vehicle assembly role, or even closed.

Iveco Ford is dismissive of the report. The company declined to participate in the project, and says: "We communicate fully on current performance and future plans with our employees, their union representatives and officials. We communicate formally and informally on all matters relating to the projected production levels up to 1992, details of new model introductions and facility changes."
