CRITICISM of the inadequacy of ‘•-• information offered to Licensing Authorities by applicants was made by Mr. Hubert Hull, president of the Transport Tribunal, in Edinburgh, last week. " With some hesitation" the Tribunal dismissed an appeal by the British Transport Commission against the grant of a licence by the Scottish Deputy Licensing Authority to James Paterson and Co. (Motor Hirers), Ltd., Aberdeen, to run a tractor of 3i tons unladen and a trailer of 2i tons.

Mr. Hull said that Paterson's were a large company and ought to have followed the normal practice of supplying in documentary form a great deal more information than they put forward at the inquiry. The applicants had given total receipts for the year ended November, 1955, but there were no comparable figures for earlier years.

For the appellants, Mr. M. J. Cowan said that the evidence did not justify the grant. Paterson's should have shown that there had been some expansion of business and some inconvenience to their customers.

Mr. D. M. Ross, for the applicants, said that an increase in business and the existence of inconvenience were clearly established. There was no risk of persons who previously hired vehicles to Paterson's being left without work. Two had come forward to support the application and said that they were not now able to hire to Paterson's to the same extent as before.
