QTATE transport was condemned as a

failure, last week, by 600 delegates at the annual conference of the National Chamber of Trade, at Hastings. They demanded that it should be returned to private enterprise.

In moving the resolution. Mr. H. Roy Pochin said that a once alert and thriving industry had been reduced to a state of moribund and helpless ineptitude Mr. M. Garrett gave an instance in which a load of furniture left Liverpool for Bexley on January 10 and had not yet arrived. Mr. W. C. Simpson said that a company had had to close its mail-order department because of unsatisfactory delivery.

INSURANCE RATES UP 124 PER CENT. CONFUSION has arisen with regard to insurance rates. In some quarters it is believed that premiums for commercial vehicles were not to be raised on June 1, when a general increase in private-car rates took place.

The Accident Offices Association told "The Commercial Motor," on Monday, that an increase of 121 per cent, in commercial-vehicle insurance rates was made on June 1, and that it applied to both tariff and non-tariff companies. This increase was forecast in "The Commercial Motor" on March 30.

A BUSINESS ALLIANCE

AN agreement has been reached between the Birmingham Small Arms Co., Ltd., on behalf of its subsidiary. Monochrome, Ltd., Redditch, and the Van der Horst Co., of Holland, under which each company will be able lo` use either of their proprietary processes of hard-chromium-plating cylinder liners.

The process previously controlled exclusively by the Van der Horst concern is known as the Porus Krome, and that under B.S.A. patents the Honeychrome. BIG ORDER FOR BRAKES

AN order for air-pressure braking equipment for trailers, valued at about 130,000, has been obtained from the South African Railways and Harbours Board by Clayton Dewandre Co., Ltd. This contract is the result of a visit which Mr. S. .E. Willett, director and general manager, made to South Africa. last March.

GUILDFORD GROUP TO CLOSE?

AT the annual general meeting of Guildford and district group of the Institute of Transport, on June 19, it will be recommended that the group be closed. One of the reasons is lack of support at meetings. The average attendance has been 12 out of a total of 166 members.

LUTON SERVICES TO BE CUT I T is reported that because of increased costs and shortage of platform staff, many services operated by Luton Corporation andthe Eastern National Omnibus Co., Ltd., are to be reduced. The two operators have a co-ordination agreement.

MUNICIPAL MANAGERS MEET

THE managers' section of the Municipal Passenger Transport Association will hold its annual meeting at Nottingham from June 26-28.
