A Résumé of Two of the Most Important Papers Submitted to the Institute of Transport Congress Now Taking Place
THE council and secretary of the Institute of Transport are to be congratulated upon the interesting and instructive programme which they arranged for the Congress at Leeds. This commenced last Wednesday and ends on Saturday. The first item on the programme was a paper by Mr, C. Pi.. Lambert, general manager of the Bolsover Colliery Co., Ltd., on " The Transport Requirements of Industry." In the evening, buses, provided by the Leeds City Transport Department, took the delegates to the Midland Hotel, Bradford, where they were received by the Lord Mayor and the chairman and members of the Bradford City Tramways Committee, a dance being arranged to take place between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m.
Yesterday (Thursday) the Lord Mayor of Leeds gave a civic welcome to the Congress, and then Dr. K. G. Fenelon, Ali.A., read his paper on " The Public Control of Passenger Transport Outside London." The afternoon was occupied by alternative visits, one to the colour-light signalling installation at Thirsk and the reclamation yard at Darlington
of the London and North Eastern Railway Co., and the other to the tramway works at Kirkstall and the Donnisthorpe garage at Hunslet of the Leeds City Transport Department, then on to the works of J. and H. McLaren, Ltd., and the beautiful venue, Temple Newsam, where the Leeds Corporation entertained the guests to tea. Last night the official reception by the Lord Mayor of Leeds and the City Transport Committee took place, followed by a dance and cabaret.
To-day (Friday) Professor J. H. Jones, M.A., is reading his paper on "The Price Issue in Public 'Utility and Monopolistic Industries." In the afternoon there are alternative visits to the plant work§ of the L.N.E.R. at Doncaster, and the works of Karrier Motors, Ltd., at Huddersfield. The reception by the president takes place to-night.
To-morrow (Saturday) there are alternative visits to the Aire and Calder Navigation, and Ripon and Fountains Abbey.
