THE MINISTRY of Defence has launched a campaign to make employer's aware of their rights when employing military reservists.
The campaign called SaBRE (Supporting Britain's Reservists and Employers) also aims to build support for members of the Volunteer Reserve Forces (VRF) and their civilian employers.
The HGV drivers and mechanics in the VRF are vital as the military suffers from the same skills shortage as road transport.
Since January 2003 10,148 reservists have being called up to serve on six or nine-month tours of Iraq, Afghanistan and Bosnia. Some claim they have encountered problems with employers.
C+E driver Sergeant Stuart Bell has been mobilised to serve in Iraq. He says:"I drive for Ray Hambling on a Rugby Cement contract out of Scunthorpe.
"1 applied for several other jobs but as soon as they knew I was liable for mobilisation the door was shut in my face."
