drivers at Manchester, West Bromwich and Grays, Essex are getting more money in the form of an additional voluntary contribution (AVC) towards their pension schemes, instead of a pay increase this year The Transport & General Workers Union says its members preferred the extra £4.80 a week towards their pension package to a 1.5% pay increase which was on the table: "A 1.5% increase on the basic rate would not have been a big pay rise, (between £3.50 to £4.00 a week for a 38-tonne driver) so we felt it would be better to look longer term," it says.
