"Please Switch Off."

Herbert Tekry and Sons, Ltd., Redditch, has recently placed on the market a simple device which is intended to act as a reminder to prevent the wastage of electric current. Lights which are switched on casually are very often left burning uselessly for a. considerable length of time.

The Terry invention takes the form of a sheetmetal disc which can be placed over the switch ; it is noticeable, but not conspicuous. The device can be obtained in several colours, and is supplied by the maker at a very low cost.

The Zenith Commercial-vehicle Carburetter.

It is necessary, of course, for the industrial-vehicle user, especially if light delivery vans are employed, to be able at all times to accelerate quickly between the numerous stoppages which this class of delivery usually necessitates. If time is wasted in picking-up on such deliveries, it amounts to a considerable loss of time on the day's working. The best results can only be attained by means of perfect. 'carburation, and the manner in which this desirable feature has been studied by the manufacturers of the Zenith carburetter, probably accounts in no small way for the popularity of this make in the commercial-vehicle industry.

In the case of many ordinary single-jet carburetters, rapidly-varying engine speeds give, of course. variations in the supply of petrol, an excess of spirit at high speeds•and a lack of it at low speeds. It will be obvious that, if a. secord jet is added, whirch works simultaneously in the opposite direction, the effect of variations in engine speed will be, corrected, and a regular flow of petrol will be maintained under all conditions.

A50 In the second and subsidiary jet which is provided in the Zenith carburetter, there is a flow of petrol independent of the internal suction in the carburetter. The first jet follows the usual spray principles, whilst the additional jet is at the foot of a small tube opened to the atmosphere at the top. The flow into this pipe from the float chamber is regulated by the height or quantity of petrol in the chamber ; the spirit is kept at a constant level, so that the pressure of petrol is always the same. In the case of slow running, the weakness of mixture which is due to insufficient suction is corrected by the additional by-pass connected with the petrol chamber, so that a rich mixture is provided which facilitates easy starting. As the throttle is opened, the by-pass automatically but gradually goes out of action as the force through the ordinary jet increases, and the engine accelerates smoothly to whatever speed may be required: When starting the engine, a slight opening of the throttle will give all the mixture required by means of the by-pass. An important point which the Zenith Carburetter Co., Ltd., 40-42, Newman Street, London, W., claims is that, once the correct adjustment of the carburetter has been obtained for any particular type of engine, it is the same for all engines of that type.

Lucas Sell-contained Headlight.

The illustration which we reproduce herewith is of an exceptionally well-built lamp, specially designed for use on commercial vehicles by Joseph Lucas, Ltd., Great King Street, Birmingham. As will be seen, it is fitted with a dual carbide chamber for carrying a reserve charge of carbide. The headlamp is fitted with a Mangin lens-mirror and parabolic reflector, and has been carefully designed to give the best possible combination of a strong central beam with a wider one to light up the aides of the road.
