MR. MARPLES last week described the terms under which the Railways Board is being allowed to operate certain road goods services.

Answering a Commons question from Mr. Geoffrey Wilson (Tory, Truro), the Minister said he had consented to these operations in the following terms:

"Transport Act, 1Q62"

In pursuance of the provisions of Section 4 12) of the Transport Act, 1962, the Minister of Transport (hereinafter referred to as ' the Minister 1 hereby consents to the exercise by the British Railways Board (hereinafter referred to as 'the Board ') of the powers to carry goods by road for hire or reward conferred by the Railway Road Transport AcLs of 1928 referred to in that section, subject to the following conditions:

1. This consent shall extend only m— (a) the carriage of goods which is ancillary to any of the transport services by road provided by the Board in pursuance of Section 4 (I) (a) of the Act arid where the goods can be conveniently carried by that service; and (b) the carriage of goods by the services spedfled in Column 1 of the Schedule hereto (hereinafter referred to as ' the additional services '). being services which have been provided by the British Transport Commission and have been in regiaar operation since January I. 1962, 2. The Board shall not— (a) keep more vehicles for the purpose of carrying goods for hire or reward (otherwise than by reason of the provision of the additional services) than they would have required if this consent had not been given: or fbj keep by reason of the provision of the additional services vehicles which exceed in numbers or unladen weight the maxima specified in relation to those services in Column 2 of the Schedule hereto.
