THE theme of The Third International Conference of The Institute of Materials Handling is to be "Handling Ahead "—designed to illustrate the educational policy of the Institute towards improved materials handling. The conference is to be held at the Metropole Hotel, Brighton, from May 8-10.

The main themes of the conference are to be: 1, materials management; 2; terminal handling; and 3, handling engineering in manufacture, including building construction. These themes will be considered, largely: in relation to six selected industries, namely: (a) timber, (b) food. (c) agriculture. (d) rubber and synthetics. (e) general commodities, and (1) light engineering. Speakers taking part will hail from the U.K., Poland, Norway, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the U.S.A.

In association with the British Industrial Truck Association, the Institute is sponsoring a fork truck driver of the year competition, the finals of which will be held on Thursday afternoon, May 9.

The conference is to be opened by the Mayor of Brighton on Wednesday, May 8. The 10th Annual Banquet of the Institute will be held the same evening.

Mr. George Downie, national chairman of the Institute of Materials Handling. speaking at a Press conference on Wednesday, said:. "We believe we are making a,major contribution' to National Productivity Year. Our object is to get costs down so , that, we can sell more cheaply abroad ".

It is understood that non-members of the Institute may attend the conference at a fee of 15 gns.
