DHL HAS put itself at the forefront of discussions over agency driver training by proposing an industry-wide standard.
The Standardised Training for Agency Workers in Road Transport (START) programme was developed in response to widespread concerns over the perception and use of drivers supplied by recruitment agencies. It is designed to regulate the training required for temporary workers.
Chris Evans, DHL's health and safety risk manager, has the backing of the Health and Safety Executive; the Freight Transport and Road Haulage Associations have both expressed interest.
Evans plans to write to the chief executives of the top .50 haulage companies in the UK asking for their support. He is also trying to persuade the Recruitment and Employment Confederation to administer the scheme.
"The START programme will give [agencies] a badge of merit so they can say that they're a respected organisation, that they're differentiated from abackroom agency," Evans explains.
"At the moment, anyone can set up an agency."
