TRANSPORT and General Workers Union national organiser Jack Ashwell has accused the Government of using the Price Commission report on road haulage as a back door to controlling the level of • pay rises for drivers.

He described the report as "an attempt to work a flankersays that there is no justification for the report which, says Mr Ashwell, is not a factual one based on knowledge of the industry.

And the report's comments on the extension of shift working and the sevenday week made it apparent that the commission had studied only a small part of the industry, said Mr Ashwell.

Mr Ashwell added that the way to solve the problems of the haulage industry was to pay the drivers a "decent upstanding wageso that overtime was ;lot necessary and then it would be possible to look at scheduling.
