Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

K C Howe

• At a time when there are so mar complaints about "juggernauts", it is got to meet a man well known in local gover ment circles who for many years has stea fastly supported the road transport industi Indeed, the opportunities for doing so ha, been many for Aid K. C. Howe, secretary the Yorkshire (West Riding) area of the RI-Ii

A Dorset man who was educated in Sou Wales, served in the RAF during World War and came into road transport afterwards, l• has been 15 years with the RHA in Leed serving as area licensing officer until h promotion two years ago to secretary. He one of only two R HA secretaries in the count to combine his duties with those of PVC area secretary. He entered local governme in 1955 and was the Mayor of Dewsbury 1965. His knowledge of goods and passeng transport has stood him in good stead in h council duties. Yorkshire R HA has no few than 700 members and the area PV0A 20 he needs two diaries to avoid confusion?

One thing has astonished Aid Howe overt years — that is the general publii ignorance concerning the road freight a passenger transport industries. Few indet he says, are aware of the vital role they pk that Britain's economy depends upon a viv efficient and flexible transport industry. A he has become extremely alarmed at t mounting anti-lorry lobby. He has at ma meetings tried to redress the balance referring to the efforts being made commercial and psv manufacturers to redu engine noise, pollution and nuisance. E vironmental pressures, he says, are bei used as a stick with which to beat t industries.

The answer, he emphasizes, is to provl more by-passes to take through traffic, and continue the extension and improvement the UK road system.

Aid Howe will continue his good work this direction as a Dewsbury alderman ur April 1974 when the new Metropolitan art will come into being and the town will amalgamated with Huddersfield and sevt neighbouring urban districts. Ald Howe fe his commitments to the R HA and PV0A becoming too extensive for him much Ion to continue in civic life and he will then res his seat. However, he will continue to I forward the case for road and passen1 transport at every possible opportunity. 1 industry could well do with many more st spirited and knowledgeable advocates.
