London's Ambulance Service Improved.

The unified management of London's ambulance services has, according to a review by the London County Council, enabled them to be operated more

economically and efficiently. The organization is divided into two sections, one for general work and the other for accidents.

By transferring sufficient existing ambulances from general stations to provide a second vehicle at each accident station during the day, the staff of each accident ambulance can be reduced by one person. The first vehicle will be used solely for accidents, whilst the second will be employed primarily for the removal of patients to general hospitals in ordinary eases of illness. The removal of patients should be consider

ably speeded up and unnecessary mileage saved. The average time taken to reach accident cases is 61 minutes.

Experiments are being made with larger types of ambulance to be available for the transport of smallpox patients in numbers should the necessity arise.

Limit on Heavy Locomotives in London!

The streets committee of the City, of London Corporation proposes, on the suggestion of the Commissioner of Police for the City, that an application should be made to the Minister of Transport for an Order prohibiting the use at heavy locomotives on roads which are unsuitable, and restricting their operation on the roads on which they cannot, without restriction, be run without danger. Basis of Purchasing Refuse Vehicle.

Shelvoke and Drewry, Ltd., has offered to supply Enheld Urban District Connell with a refuse-cellection vehicle upon the following terms :—The first instalment to be paid before March, 1934, and the other two during the ensuing half-yearly rating periods of 1934 and 1935. No interest would be charged on the amounts of payment outstanding.

This arrangement would spread the payment over a period of 16 months, and thus avoid the delay in obtaining the sanction to a loan and save the loan charges. The finance committee recommends accepting the terms and that the application to the Minister of Health for sanction to borrow be not. proceeded with.
