AS from the begin. ning of thia month, 92 additional country branches of the Yorkshire Penny Bank and 16 branches of the Newcastle Savings Bank have been included in the scheme for purchasing railway tickets through savings banks, which has been in operation in the North of England since November, 1928. Under the scheme depositors are granted a 5 per cent, discount on all classes of rail ticket, except season and 1,000-mile tickets, in addition to the usual hank interest on money deposited. The tickets may be issued to any station on the four large railways of Great Britain. Many are the enterprising moves made by the railways, and coach operators must not be content to rest on their oars if they are to achieve continued success.

THE paper on the subject of transmission, read last Tuesday by Mr. L. H. Pomeroy before the Institution of Automobile Engineers, was received with the greatest interest. Much of it was devoted to the question of transmission in private cars, but the Daimler Fluid Flywheel and Wilson gearbox, which are utilized on the Daimler bus chassis, received considerable attention.

It was interesting to learn that the slip of this o18 flywheel depends upon the engine torque and the diameter of the driven member, and with one of suitable size it varies from 10 per cent. with heavy torque at comparatively low speeds to 2 per cent. with light torque on level roads. The fluid employed must be renewed to the extent of a piut to a pint and a half per week, but, in case of emergency, soapy water could be utilized and it could even run on plain water.

USE of the Daimler Fluid Flywheel eliminates bad ' overrun effects when the throttle is closed, so that the engine drives the vehicle. With the reversal of torque the direction of the circulation of the fluid is also reversed, and the slowing down of• the circulation in one direction and starting it up in the other is a relatively slow process, thus ensuring that the reversed forces, right through from the rear hub keys to the gears, are applied very gently.

THE question of tractor wheels and of the methods used for securing adhesion on the land requires careful investigation. The extra compression of the soil resulting from the use of tractors is said to lead to a better retention of moisture and, as a result, to improved germination, but later there is a danger of the compressed soil.cracking and thus interfering with normal root development. The tractor has a definite pull over the horse for land work, and experiments conducted have shown that the impressions made by the hoofs of a horse team are appreciably heavier than those made by the wheels of a tractor.

A runTIA-KR proof of the success of the Commer cial Motor Exhibition at Olympia is that orders to the extent of' nearly 1100,000 were received for Armstrong-Saurer oil-engined chassis, whilst if only 20 per cent. of the genuine inquiries received during the period of the Show materialize into orders, they will guarantee sefficient output to keep the works at Scotswood in full production for a, long time ahead. A SALESMAN, interested in pushing an oil engine, was trying to persuade a big user to adopt his make. As a final argument, he said : "Users of our engines are in a very strong position in respect of service, and they are always coming to lfs with their troubles." As he had previously claimed that this particular engine gave no trouble, the argument was not strong enough to persuade the user.

A NUMBER of London buses of the new type is still running without any indication at the rear of the services which the vehicles are working.

Many critical comments have been made to us concerning this matter, and, in our opinion, it is one which deserves attention. After running to board a bus, it is disconcerting and annoying to find that it is not the one desired.
