THANKS FOR YOUR thoughtful editorial on the subject of cycling in heavy traffic being promoted (CM 11 July). As you point out, serious investment is needed before cycling can be responsibly promoted in central London.

A major part of that investment should be spent on training and ensuring that only responsible people are allowed to cycle in busy urban areas.

When you think of the training and investment in taxi, bus and truck drivers, it's crazy to just let anyone — whether sober or not — loose on the most vulnerable of machines — and with no insurance! It's a testament to the professionalism of others that serious and fatal accidents are not more frequent. Keep up the good work! John Ormandy Seville, Spain
