Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Gravesend-based Stallion Tipping Gears has developed a range of mid-chassis tip-gears suitable for rigids and trailers up to 60 tonnes gross.

The Startip 6 and 8 designs feature a single, multi-stage ram pivotting within an 11-frame that is integral with a fabricated steel stabiliser frame containing the hydraulic fluid reservoir. Its 5254° of movement is limited by a cut-out switch on the H-frame.

For eight-leggers, the frame folds forward on wide hinge pins running in oil-impregnated bronze bushes, but on shorter sixwheeled chassis the stabiliser is fitted behind the hydraulic ram.

On 8x4s up to 32 tonnes gross Stallion fits a 600rrun deep,10stage ram. The 6x4 version, using a nine-stage ram, is slightly shallower and lighter.

Managing director Roger Stowe says: "We're not getting into a price war over this. Our eight-wheeler system will retail at around £5,795 (its dry weight is 523kg) and the 78kg lighter 6x4 version is slightly cheaper:.

Both ram assemblies tilt on trunnions as the body rises; the top section is secured on a balltype fitting. Although the larger ram needs only 60 litres of oil' there is a combined capacity of 128 litres. For six-leggers only the 90-litre main section carries oil.

The upper stabiliser-cumtank section has a breathing valve while the lower element is fitted with a filler plug that can be reached for topping up when the body is down. There are stop cocks on the tank outlets to prevent it draining during maintenance and sight gauges are standard.

All production models will have corners on steel plate rounded off but on 6x4 versions the steel block housing the feed union will be replaced with an inertia anti-surge valve.

The Startip system, which is being patented, can be made to suit all popular makes and widths of rigid chassis. Apart from the valves the whole system is made at Gravesend.

The first production model is being built onto a Seddon Atkinson 5.8m TC32.33L 8x4 for Kent operator A Plumb Transport. An example is due to be exhibited at next month's Tipcon show.

Larger Startip systems with longer stabiliser frames are offered for semi-trailers. They can be supplied without reservoirs in the frame and the stabiliser can be retrofitted to tippers with front-end rams for extra safety
