Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE crane shown in the accompany' ing illustration possesses a number of features which are distinctly novel in such a machine. in the first place. hydraulic gear, similar to that employed on a tipping body, provides the lifting means. There are two ram assemblies, one on each side of the lower jib. Both the lower and upper jibs are pivoted, at different points, to a combined tool cupboard and ballast box at the rear of the outfit.

When the lower jib is caused to rise, its movement is conveyed to the upper or main jib through flanged steel pulleys which run on a special track formed on the upper jib. The oil pump is driven in the usual way from the power takeoff of the gearbox.

The controls consist of two levers, that on the driver's left being for engaging and disengaging the pump-drive gear. and the one on his tight is connected to the control valve which governs all the motions of the jib. The jib ,itself does not swivel, as the design of the outfit is such that the load must be lifted from the front.

It will be obvious that were not special provisions made, a proportion of all loads would have to be borne by the front springs. This, however, is overcome by arranging that a chassis sub-frame member bears on a roller mounted on the front axle, so that the springs do not have to carry any extra loading consequent upon the special service which the vehicle performs.

The crane is mounted on a MorrisCommercial C.8/F.W.D. chassis, which" has four-wheel drive and a five-speed gearbox. The Hydracrane, as it is called, is made in three types—Models 2, 3 and 4—and in all cases there are three points on the main jib from which loads can be lifted. The maximum Lifting capacity of the largest model is 45 cwt.

The maker is F. Taylor and Sons (Manchester), Ltd.. 136-142, Bolton Road, Pendleton, Salford, 6.
