Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Few authorities are more fully alive to the necessity for the provision of wellconstructed and substantial roads to bear the ever-increasing volume of vehicular traffic than the Durham County Council, and in the preliminary estimate from the Works Committee the cost of main reads for the year 1924-25 is placed at the large figure of £477,545. This includes £160,000 I or directly controlled roads, £30,600 for maintenance, • £105.000 for reconstruction of urban roads, and £60,000 for the new east coast road.

Particular attention is now being given to the necessity for providing suitable river crossings, as well as highways, irs order to cope adequately with the vast and continuous streams of road traffic between the towns in the county, and an ambitious scheme, which has now been approved, provides for in all 14 bridge works, at an estimated total cost of 2268,000. Of this it is anticipated a grant of 65 per cent, will be secured . from the Ministry of Transport. The most important features of the programme are the erection of new bridges over the Derwent at Swalwell, and the Wear, near the Sunderland Bridge, at Croxdalo, respectively. Each will cost about £56,000, whilst the Lambton Bridge at Chester-le-Street is CO be reconstructed at an estimated .figure of £52,000. Thus every effort; is being made to provide better facilities.
