• Mansfield-based haulier Meeks Transport is facing an uncertain future following British Coal's announcement that it is to close pits, at Aberfan and Oakdale.
Meeks were using 16 trucks to move around 4,000 tonnes of coal a week for British Coal subsidiary Coal Products.
"We've laid off three drivers already and we're struggling to keep the rest = going," says Dave Tingle, transport manager. at the company's Gwent office. He is pessimistic about making up the lost business: "There's not a lot of work about at ail."
Meeks employs 25 drivers at its Welsh site, with coal providing most of the business.
British Coal South Wales described the effect of the closures on the haulage business as "quite minimal, as the bulk movement from both these collieries is mainly by rail".
