Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Some delays could occur in obtaining driving licence renewals for licences which expire after October 31, the DoE warned this week.

This is because the renewals procedure is being transferred from local taxation offices to the driving and vehicle licencing centre at Swansea. From November 1 it will not be possible to renew a driving licence at local taxation offices across the counter but renewal applications should still be sent to the taxation office who will forward them to Swansea. Applications may now be made two months before they are required.

The DoE points out that if a renewal has been applied for the holder is entitled by law to continue to drive in this country while awaiting his licence. Anyone wishing to drive abroad, however, must be in possession of his licence before leaving the UK. The alternative is to use his renewal receipt to obtain an international driving permit through the Automobile Association or the Royal Automobile club.

Applications for renewals dated from November 1 onwards are now being handled by Swansea.
