TENDERS for carrying Christmas

mail have been invited by the London Post Office a month earlier than usual. Operators in London who do not receive an invitation to tender by September 15 should contact the Regional Director, London Postal Region, Mails and Transport Branch (C hr ist rn a s Arrangements), King Edward Building, London, E.C.1.

Tenders have to be returned by October 15, and contractors will be notified by November 15 whether their quotations have been accepted. Following consultations with officials of the Region, the Metropolitan and South Eastern Area of the Road Haulage Association and the National Association of Furniture Warehousemen and Removers have recommended' to them the following rates;

Vans of 251-350 Cuft., 12s. 9d. an hour plus 71d. per mile over 50 miles a day; 351-450 cu. ft., 14s. per hour, 9d. a mile over 50; over 450 cu. ft., 15s. an hour, 9d. a mile over 50. Vans up to 250 cu. ft. are no longer required.

The minimum daily hire should be for 81 hours, and on Sundays and Christmas Day, 51 hours, Payment for night work between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. 'should be an extra 8d. an hour. Drivers' wages are to be added as additional charges.

The Post Office have not given any undertaking that these rates will prove acceptable, and the Regional Director has emphasized that contractors will be expected to honour their obligations once their tenders have been accepted. Last-minute defections have caused great inconvenience in the past.

NEW CHESTERFIELD TRANSPORT HEADQUARTERS

MEW offices at 99 Saltergate, Chester11 field, have been occupied by Phillip Smith, Michael and Partners, Ltd., as headquarters for a transport undertaking offering services mainly in northeast Derbyshire. The managing director is Mr. M. Berresford, former deputy marketing manager of the East Midland Division of the National Coal Board. He later took an appointment with the British Anthracite group, and this he continues to hold.

The company began operating last November from Nottingham and at first concentrated upon the delivery of coal to electricity and gas undertakings and private concerns. Now, the range of traffics handled is greater and plant are in hand for an expansion of activity.

STANDSTILL ON BUSMEN'S PAY

THE National Joint Industrial Council have not yet fixed a date to hear the wages committee's recommendations on the claim for -an extra 18s. a week in pay for 77,000 workers employed by municipal bus undertakings. The committee met foi three hours in London last week. No statement was issued after the meeting.
