Operation Stack in limbo

PLANS FOR HANDLING trucks barred from Felixstowe port when stormy weather closes it down look likely to be delayed indefinitely after the council announced was contracting out almost all of its services.

The huge shake-up of the way Suffolk County Council is run has meant its solution to the current Operation Stack arrangements has slipped off the radar, despite promising a solution by the end of August.

It means that thousands of port-bound HGVs could face another winter of being herded off the A14 and onto an old A-road in Levington in order to wait for the container terminal to reopen.

Road Haulage Associa tion senior area manager Pete Butler is concerned about the lack of progress, but adds: We have more pressing concerns than Operation Stack to be frank, like whether roads will be built that we need, especially in the East.'

The council would only say that no decision has been made yet about Operation Stack provisions.
