Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A new report reveals high levels of attacks on drivers and their vehicles; most of them at truckstops and service stations. Jennifer Ball reports.

MORE THAN 16% of truck drivers have had their cabs broken into or suffered a personal attack over the past three years, according to the European School of Management.

Its Report on Attacked Transport Drivers 2000-2003 reveals the majority of attacks occurred at motorway service areas (41%) and truckstops (30%).

About 30% of drivers were asleep at the time of the attack;7% were injured.

The Research On Attacked Drivers group (ROAD) and Protekdor, which commissioned the report, are now seeking funding to carry out a pan-European study of attacks on international truck drivers. They want to identify crime hot spots and any trends in attacks on international truck drivers in a bid to gain support for more secure truck parks.

Frank Heinrich-Jones from ROAD says: "Attacks on truck drivers is a serious and growing problem. There is a general lack of awareness of the scale of the problem, the number of incidents occurring and the consequences, which can be significant.

"Drivers frequently do not report attacks and when they are reported the incidents are not cen trally recorded. The report suggests some practical security measures which will enhance truck driver security and protect their vehicle and its load. However, the provision of more secure and driver friendly truck parking facilities is required."
