A DIFFERENCE of opinion between coach operators and the police on the question of speed limits became apparent at the annual dinner of the Passenger Vehicle Operators' Association in London on Monday.

Mr. F. Broomfield, chairman, called for a higher legal maximum speed for public service vehicles outside built-up areas and said that safety should be the criterion. Modern coaches could be driven safely at high speed.

Sir John Nott-Bower, Commissioner of Police of -the Metropolis, in reply, defended the present limit. He said that restrictions on speed had reduced the seriousness of accidents and he looked forward to the day when drivers would regard it as a moral obligation to observe the legal limits. An improvement in the general standard of driving would, however, do more than anything to prevent accidents.

Mr. Broomfield referred to the high cost to operators of traffic diversions. He complained that operators had not been consulted about road construction, the planning of new estates, and proposed restrictions on waiting. He also stressed the urgent need to reduce the delay in securing permission to increase fares.
