Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An Economical Combination of a Special Mercedes-Benz Motive Unit with a Carrimore Attachment WHEN the Mercedes-Benz Miracle oil-engined 21-tonner was introduced in this country quite recently (our full description and road-test report appeared in our issue dated September 2), it was evident that, in a somewhat different chassis and with modified transmission, the 3.77-litre engine would form a basis for a useful articulated vehicle carrying a far greater pay-load. British MercedesBenz, Ltd., 111, Grosvenor Road, London, S.W.1, has now introduced a motive unit of this kind, which, in conjunction with a semi-trailer made by Carrimore Six Wheelers, Ltd.,. North Finehley, London, N.12, is marketed as the Mercedes-Benz L04-type MiracleCarrirnore 5-6-tonner.

The motive unit is in no sense an altered 2i-ton chassis, but has been separately produced for its job. It has a special frame of deeper section, also stronger rear springs, whilst the transmission is entirely different. Behind the original clutch is a two-compartment eight-speed gearbox incorporating, at the front, a Maybach two-speed easychange gear and, at the rear, an orthodox four-speed unit. A short shaft, with fabric universal joint, extends to a self-aligning steady bearing attached to a. cross-member, from which the drive is taken to the three-quarterfloating spiral-bevel axle by a tubular shaft, having two Mechanics universal joints. Shaft angularity is moderate.

The rear-axle ratio is 5.43 to 1 ,(as against 4.85 on the 45-cwt. model) and, with the Maybach overdrive, this gives at an engine speed of 2,000 r.p.m. a maximum road speed of 85 m.p.h., the tyres being 32-in. by 6-in, pneumatics, with twin driving and trailing wheels.

The maximum body length available is 22 ft. 6 ins., but the xrehicle is to be produced as standard with a 20-ft. body the inside width of which is 6 ft. 6 ins., the tractor wheelbase being 10 ft. 4 ins. and the attachment wheelbase 12 ft. 9 ins., making the overall length 29 ft. 7 ins., and the floor height 3 ft. 7 ins.

The list price of the complete product, with drop-side body, painted but not lettered, is /912, the price for the motive unit with cab and seven tyres being 1725.
