Cambridge is considering the advisability of purchasing a motor, firstaid, fire-brigade machine.
Norwich contemplates the purchase or a motor fire-engine in -the near future, and informal enquiries are already on foot to that end.
The Local Government Board has written to the Merton Urban Council asking to be furnished with particulars of the type of motor fire-engine which the council proposes to acquire. These particulars are to be sent as soon as tenders have been received.
A Tire Off.
A discussion took place, at the last meeting of the Glasgow City Council, with reference to the coming-off of a tire from one of the Council's motor fire-engines on the 27th August. We learn from Mr. William Waddel, the chief officer of the brigade, that the aecident happened near Glasgow Green, and that the tire was one of the clinched variety. When the rubber left the off-side front rim, the machine refused to answer the steer ing wheel, and was ultimately " brought up " against a tree. Two of the firemen were injured but both are doing well.
Salford Orders.
The Watch Committee of the Salford Town Council has accepted the tender of Merryweather and Sons, Ltd., of Greenwich, for two petrolmotor fire-engines, and a fire escape, the combined price of which amounts to 1:2,250. The Committee has further accepted the tender of Messrs. Wilson and Stockall, of Bury, for a petrol-motor ambulance van at £475.
Ways and Means.
The Local Government Board has sanctioned the borrowing, by the Kingston-upon-Thames Town Council, of k1,740 for the purchase of two motor fire engines, the loan to be repaid in 10 years. At the last meeting of the Town Council, comment was made upon the fact that, adthough great opposition was shown, by some councillors. to the proposal, the Local Government Board had given the re
quisite sanction without the usual inquiry. It was mentioned that arrangements were being made to send a driver to Dennis Brothers, Ltd., of Guildford, to be instructed in the management and use of the various parts of the machines.
Southampton Brigade Again in Trouble.
The chief of the Southampton Fire Brigade, who was fined on the 3rd ult. for exceeding the speed limit, is again in trouble, this time at the hands of Mr. Councillor Maedonnell, who lodged a complaint with the Fire Brigade Committee against the loud ringing of a gong, and the blowing of a whistle, whilst the engine was being driven thrmigh Howard Street, in the early morning of the 28th ult. He urged that there was no necessity for the gong to be sounded when the vehicle was being driven along an empty street at two o'clock in the morning. The explanation given by the Fire Brigade Superintendent was, however, considered quite satisfactory by the members of the council.
