• Readings given by controversial dynamic axle weighbridges are fair, the Road Haulage Association has conceded.

The RHA's acceptance of the consistency of the weighbridges follows a four-week Department of Transport trial at three sites, where drivers of vehicles found to be over their axle weight limits were given the chance to be weighed again. The scheme was introduced after pressure from the association, which had received complaints that dynamic axle weighbridges were giving inconsistent readings. It argued that enforcement officers rarely allowed a re-weigh (CM 15-21 November 1990).

"It would appear the second weigh is on a par with the first weigh," says the RI-IA. "There are not the variations we thought there were and we will have to concede that the system is fair."

The trial, at three DTp-run weighbridges, in Doxey on the M6, on the A74 and near Dunkirk in Cheshire, finished on Monday. The Department is not commenting until it pub
