Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• An unofficial work to rule by 2,000 London Transport bus inspectors started last Saturday. The inspectors claim that they are paid less than some of the drivers they supervise. Union officials warned that the entire bus system could break down within a few days.

Mr. Fred Winter, organizer of the Transport and General Workers' Union clerical and supervisory group, said: "It will mean that the irregular services will become more and more irregular-. Some one-man bus drivers, he claimed, were taking home more than £30 a

week but inspectors' earnings were only between £20 and E23 a week.

London Transport said that it could not consider a new pay rise until 12 months after the previous settlement—a 6 per cent rise last July—because of the Government's prices and incomes policy.

Meanwhile London Transport conductresses have won their fight to get union backing for their claim to equal pensions and sick pay. A decision was taken last week by the TGWU central bus committee.
