Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Reorganization within the Portslade and Shoreham based company of PD Wharfage and Transport Ltd. is about to be carried a stage further.

The company, part of the Powell Duffryn Group, was established a year ago to develop PD's interests in the wharfage and transport fields. It then took over control of the two principal Powell Duffryn subsidiaries trading in these activities in Southern England—Corrall Transport Ltd. and John Brown and Son (South Coast) Ltd.

In the latest development, which will rationalize the number of operating companies, the two main subsidiaries will be absorbed by PD Wharfage and Transport. All trading will be carried on in the one company, both in its full name and using the shortened forms—PD Wharfage and PD Transport—as appropriate.

To achieve complete integration the company is reshaping its internal organization into activity divisions.

Mr. A. McFarlin, at present managing director of Correll Transport, becomes "director, transport" and will assume responsibility for all company transport operations, including those at present under John Brown management. The Transport Division, with some 400 commercial vehicles, will be engaged in general haulage and contract hire throughout the South of England and East Anglia. There are bases at Cambridge, Chichester, Croydon, Shoreham and Sittingbourne.

Similarly, Mr. G. S. Knight, the present managing director of John Brown, will become "director, wharfage" and will look after the company's wharfage operations, including those carried on in the Port of Shoreham by Correll Transport. The Wharfage Division operates as stevedores, wharfingers, warehousemen, ship brokers and forwarding agents at Dover, Shoreham, Littlehampton, Portsmouth, Southampton and Cowes (Isle of Wight).

A third company in the Group, Gubbins and Ball Ltd.—haulage and agricultural can tractors, builders' merchants and ready-mixed concrete suppliers, based at Newport, Isle of Wight—is also affected by the reorganization. While the company is also merging with PD Wharfage and Transport, the name Gubbins and Ball will continue to be used for trading purposes.

Mr. E. C. Golding continues to be responsible for Isle of Wight operations and also for managing on the island the solid fuel business of PD Fuels (Corral's), another member of the Powell Duffryn Group.

Although these changes have a considerable effect on the internal organization of the company and its outward appearance, most clients will continue to deal with the same managers and employees.
