CONSENT has been granted by the ....East Midland Licensing Authority to Nottingham Corporation to run buses to its new Clifton estate. An application for similar consent by West Bridgford Urban District Council was withdrawn, because the two authorities had agreed in principle to run a joint service.

Mr. L. W. A. White, opposing for Barton Transport, Ltd., and the South Notts Bus Co., Ltd., objected to consent being given and said that the matter might be taken to the High Court. He declared that the councils. were not entitled to make such an agreement, and West Bridgford's withdrawal of the application was at its own peril.

Mr. J. W. Fletcher, chairman, said West Bridgford appeared to be sure that in accordance with a Parliamentary Act of 1927, it did not require the Authority's consent.

In announcing decision, he said that no undertaking should have the sole right to operate in new housing estates, and all had a part to play in development. The only reason for canalizing traffic was to make sure. that competition was not wasteful.

It would now be possible for applications for road service licences, for which all four undertakings were applying, to be heard.

In a resolution to the executive committee, the area views "with great concern" the opening of new Pickfords branches at Wellington, Newquay and Penzance.
