Supply and demand in the used truck market is nicely balanced, says Thomas Hardie’s Jonathan Bownes, as Euro-6 looms large on the horizon

Words: Kevin Swallow JONATHAN BOWNES (pictured), used sales executive at Volvo Trucks dealer Thomas Hardie in Middlewich, says the current equilibrium between those who want trucks and those available is nicely balanced.

“During 2008/2009 there were too many vehicles, then it tilted towards the manufacturers in 2010, and although there currently isn’t a dearth of trucks in the market, the volume is not going to get any shallower,” he says.

More importantly, he doesn’t think Euro-6 is going to be the big issue everyone has predicted. “Every manufacturer is in the same boat when it comes to Euro-6 technology and price increases. It’s no different to the other challenges hauliers have had to face,” he says.

In the past 15 years, he says, operators have faced Euro-1 to Euro-5, SCR/EGR, and digital tachographs. “Before Euro-6 arrives [1 January 2014] there is a lot of water to pass under the bridge in terms of the economy with the recession and the Euro,” he adds. ■
