• A proposal to pay 2,500 BRS maintenance men a £2 a week increase is being examined by the department of Employment and Productivity. BRS and the unions involved state that they believe the proposal is in line with the Government's incomes policy as it is designed to retain qualified staff. The loss of staff has been attributed to the present rates of pay. The new rate, if approved, will raise the London weekly basic wage for mechanics to £17. It is understood that a productivity factor is involved in the proposal.
