I done in the social field for transport workers depends very much on the requirements of the common transport policy, but social policy in this sector must not be .subordinate to purely economic factors arising from free competition ". This point was made by M. Levi Sandri, a member of the E.E.C. Commission, when he. addressed the general meeting of the Community branch of the International Transport
Federation in Brussels last week. .
' Emphasizing that, from 1965 onwards. European standards would be fixed for working hours, overtime, composition of crews and supervision through general use of the new individual log book. M. Sandri said that workers and employers would nevertheless be free to negotiate collective agreements fixing even more favourable conditions.
