Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Ford has announced some of its coming months' plans for its commercial range, including a naturally-aspirated version of the 1.8-litre IDI P100 pickup turbo-diesel engine for the Ford Escort van range, and a second-generation version of the 2.5-litre DI diesel engine with a new gearbox, for the Transit range.

The changes will occur in the autumn and Commercial Motor understands that the company also has autumn plans for another "Bonus" edition of the Ford Transit and a nineseater short-wheelbase nonPSV version of the Transit minibus. There should also be a new low-boost 60kW turbocharged version of the 2.5-litre DI diesel-engine for the Transit range next year.

The naturally-aspirated 1.8litre engine is based on the 1.6-litre ID1 diesel currently

used in the Ford Escort and Fiesta ranges. The new engine is designed to replace the 1.6litre in all applications, except the Ford Fiesta, which will have to wait until 1989 and the new B13 Fiesta.

The revamped 2.5-litre DI diesel-engine has been reengineered to answer some of the criticism of the old unit (noise, vibration and low power). Ford says that the replacement engine has many changes including replacement castings for the cylinder head. The new gearbox is the Ford MT75 five-speed, allsynchromesh unit designed to replace the whole range of mixed gearboxes in the Transit, the P100 pickup and some of the company's passenger cars.

The new turbo-charged engine for the Transit will be sold in limited numbers to operators who need more power for applications like PSV or fully-laden haulage.

Ford has not yet offered a turbocharged version of its 2.5litre DI engine, but Turbo Technics — which has in the past developed turbocharged versions of many Ford engines — is already marketing a 60kW turbocharged variant of the 2.5-litre unit. When Ford's own turbocharged model comes on to the market it is likely to bear a close resemblance to the Turbo Technics version.
