no' jobs bloodbath'

SUGGESTIONS of massive redundancies at the Bathgate plant of Leyland Vehicles have been discounted.

It had been suggested that British Leyland chairman Michael Edwardes had threatened a "jobs bloodbath" at Bathgate if production levels — said to be 54 per cent of target — did not improve.

However, a Leyland Vehicles spokesman told CM this week that discussions with trade unions were being conducted on a company-wide basis.

"Until this series of discussions with unions is complete, we cannot comment any further," he said.

He did say that, overall, production levels were "not what they ought to be" but could not comment on the levels at Bathgate.

There is a surplus of some Leyland lorry chassis — mainly older Lancashire-built models — but the company is determined to increase its market share.

A £40 million investment programme is already committed to LV's Scottish plants.
