The board claims that the study, intended as a basis for its annually updated strategic training plan, is the most comprehensive manpower study ever undertaken.
Twenty-two individual managerial occupations, eight separate sectors, four regional breakdowns, and national group companies were all covered by the study which looked primarily at personal backgrounds, career patterns, and job characteristics and responsibilities.
Amcngst the statistics which emerge from the study are:— • There are over 60,000 managers in road transport • Only three per cent of the managers are women • A third have no formal educational qualifications • Three per cent are graduates • More than a quarter have held their present job for 10 years • The average age is 42, but 45 per cent are under 40 • Seven per cent will retire within five years The board believes that the statistics can be integrated with its own training expertise to satisfy the need for improved management training.
