An Unusual Boring Feat. .

A REMARKABLE achievement by

the aid of the Van Norman boring bar was made when Major Gardner recently obtained his international speed records in Germany. We mention it because it shows the efficiency of the method employed, The car attacked the 1,100 cc. record with a 57 rim). bore engine, and in less than 48 hours afterwards was taken out again to attack the 1,500 c.c. record, the bores having been enlarged to 59.5 mm.

Boring was done without removing the engine or disturbing the crankshaft, and after assembly the engine was given merely a short warming-up

111.11.

The job was done in the workshops of the Germanemobilerpoliee.,-and-took, roughly, three hours longer than usual because of the precautions taken. Special funnels were affixed to the ]oar pelts of the bores and held in place by a common plate.

Interesting Bowden Brochure.

AN excellent brochure giving a brief history of Bowden from 1897-1939 has been produced by Bowden (Engineers), Ltd.., Willesden Junction, London, N.W.10. It is a striking survey of the development of a particularly interesting mechanism which has been found invaluable in many classes of machine.

I N the course of a recent contribution to the proceedings of the French Societe des Ingenieurs Civils, M. Gross (who, since July of last year, has been in charge of a compressed-gas filling station in Toulouse) reports that tests carried out by the Toulouse Public Transport Co. show that approximately 61.5 cubic it. of compressed gas will do the work of one litre (1.76 pint) of ordinary commercial-vehicle motor spirit, giving a financial advantage in favour of gas of 43 per cent.

In the case of a lorry weighing, with load, 11i tons, operated by the Toulouse Gas Co., tests have shown that as against one litre of petrol, only 66.2 cubic ft. of gas are required, the advantage being about 50 per cent.
