By Laura Hailstone TRANSACTION spokesman Peter Carroll has sold his Kentbased haulage business, Seymour Transport, to Barnstaple, Devonbased Evans Transport, for an undisclosed sum.

The sale follows Carroll's announcement in December that he plans to run as an MP in the next election. in a bid to become the road haulage industry's political champion (CM 17 Dec).

Carroll says: It's been a horrendous period with the fall in construction, which we're very reliant on, and sometimes you have to take a hard commercial view. To survive in this market, Seymour Transport needs someone behind it with a lot of strength and Evans Transport fits the bill:' The companies will continue to trade with their own identities, but will operate under the umbrella of the Evans Group. The combined companies will have a turnover in excess of £20m and a fleet of 150 vehicles. 200 trailers and 90 cranes Evans Transport managing director Nigel Evans, who will also become MD of Seymour Trans port. says: "This merger is an exciting development for both firms. We can now offer superb nationwide logistics solutions for major customers."

Carroll says he'll remain involved with Seymour Transport, but not on a fulltime basis. The rest of his time will be devoted to his campaign to stand as a Liberal Democrat candidate for a seat in Maidstone and the Weald.
