Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Highways Agency (HA) says it is maintaining its fight to combat icy roads, but warns drivers they must still continue to take care, with further snow and freezing temperatures being predicted, "The HA is ready for the cold weather this winter. Our salt spreaders and snow ploughs have been working flat out and [they] will continue to operate and treat the roads for as long as the cold weather continues," an HA spokesman tells CM.

However, he goes on to warn: "Drivers are asked to carry out simple vehicle checks before they set out; to carry a severe weather emergency kit in their vehicles; and to monitor the traffic and weather conditions and plan their journeys by using our website or listening to our DAB digital radio stations."

He adds: "We are monitoring the weather conditions and will issue further advice to road users should it be appropriate during the course of the day."

The HA says it is too early to determine the level of road accidents that have been caused as a direct result of the current spell of cold weather.

Detailed information about roadworks and road conditions on the motorways and trunk roads across England is available on the HA's information line. Call 08457 504030.
