THE FIRST guided busway in the world to use double-deck buses is to be introduced within six months by West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive.
This guided bus pilot project will form part of a Elm route improvement scheme covering the full length of route from central Birmingham to Short Heath (CM May 21). The 600 metres of busway will give operating experience necessary for possible further extensions to the system.
Junction modifications and other transport management measures along the route are expected to reduce journey time by about 10 per cent.
Fourteen Metro buses are being converted for the purpose by Metro-Cammell.
