Mr Fox said that it was the rule rather than the exception for road tolls to be charged in European countries.
It could cost a haulier up to £300 in such tolls on a journey from Yorkshire to Italy. "It is ludicrous that the Continentals can then use our roads for nothing. The British are a soft touch," said Mr Fox.
He went on: "The Government have cut back on the money spent on road maintenance. This would be a way of making a contribution towards maintenance costs."
Continental heavy lorries caused considerable damage to British roads and a road toll would be an easy levy to raise.
"All I am saying is that if a source of revenue is available to other countries then why not us," he said.
