Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TWO Leyland Lynx articulated tankers with a prototype gearbox arrangement are being evaluated by Tunnel Cement Ltd, at Padeswood, Clwyd.

The have been supplied by Lex Tillotson at Newcastleunder-Lyme with a canted gearbox so that a smooth drive is obtained to the big compressor for pressurising the tank to unload its cement.

• On the 32-ton AEC Mandator tractors of the Tunnel Cement fleet, the gearbox has both left-hand and right-hand facings for the power take-off drives to blower and tippinggear pump.

This allows a good blower position and drive to be Obtained in the space between gearbox and drive axle, despite the short wheelbase.

With the 26-ton Leyland Lynx, however, the power take-off for high torque applications is at the back of the gearbox under the propeller shaft — a position quite unsuitable on a short wheelbase tractor for Tunnel Cement to get a blower drive.

The awkward positioning has been overcome by remounting the gearbox at an kngle, and turning it clockwise *rough a distance of one stud on the bellhousing.

This has swung the power take-off over so that the blower drive is now virtually straight and clear of the pro peller shaft.

Maximum power demand of the twin-meshing-rotor blade compressor for blowing cement from the tank is 4.6kW (62hp).

Canting the gearbox has meant modifying the changespeed linkage and the clutch withdrawal mechanism.

An extended filler had to be fitted to the gearbox to maintain the correct oil level.

When coupled to one of the operators Metalair tip-andblow tank semi-trailers, each Lynx can haul a payload of 16.9 tonnes (16 tons 13cwt),
