A" LONDON haulage company, which, before nationalization, ran nearly 100 lorries, may soon be making a "bid to return to their farmer strength. It is the family concern of J. R. Mundy, Ltd., 39 Battersea Bridge Road, London, S.W.11, who formerly owned the British Road Services' depot in Battersea Bridge Road.

When the depot, together with 19 lorries (46 tons) and two spare vehicles and a trailer, was first offered for sale in list R.2, Mr. Reg Mundy, son of the founder of the business, made three unsuccessful bids for it. His last tender was £31,250 .

The depot was not sold, and the original unit was divided into seven lots, all without premises, which were offered in list 8. The premises are to be auctioned on Wednesday, and Mr. Mundy will be there to make his bid.

J. R. Mundy, Ltd., now operate a small fleet of vehicles under C hiring margins. Most of Mr. Mundy's time is now devoted to Chelsea Estates, Ltd., a property company, also founded by his father.

' A new company, the .Turriff Transport • Co., Ltd., have been successful with their tender for the TurritT (Aberdeen) depot of B.R.S. and began operating from the premises in Fife Street on Wednesday. General and

livestock haulage is being undertaken. The unit comprised offices, garage, parking facilities and a loading bank, as well as five Vehicles (18 tons) and three livestock containers. Managing director of the company is Mr. John R.

Moir, who was traffic assistant at the depot from 1949.

SCOTLAND Inter-City Transport and Trading Co., Ltd., Cumbernauld, have been granted a special A licence for five lorries (311 tons).

The Scottish Licensing Authority has also issued special A licences to the following, all of whom have bought units before; Mr. James Middlemiss, Greenlaw, for four vehicles (19i tons), including two cattle containers (31 tons); Moore's Motors (Ayr), Ltd.. Ayr, three articulated vehicles (81 tons) ahd three trailers; Forth Haulage Co., Ltd., Edinburgh, three vehicles (17 tons); John Barrie (Contractor), Ltd., Glasgow. one (3 tons); N.M.U. (1954), LW.. 65 Wiggington Road, York, one (21 tons), based at Edinburgh; Mr. W. S. Dick-, Glasgow, three (161 tons); and Messrs. James D. Millar and Sons, Guardbridge, one (3: tons).

Th.: lorries bought by Mr. Dick have been made over to London Scottish Transport, Ltd.. Glasgow. and the one by Messrs. James D. Millar was assigned by Mr. William M. Tripney, Grangemouth. New purchasers are Mr. Peter P. Gauld, Stonehaven, who has bought two vehicles (6 tons); Mr. Allan Moffat, junr., Carnivath, one (3 tons), assigned by Mr, Sant Anderson, Newhouse; Messrs. Houston Bros., Curanock, one (3 tons), assigned by Moore's Motors (Ayr), Ltd.; Mr. John Hodge, Kirk Yethciltn, one (3 tons) assigned by Mr. Alexander M. Wright, Dalkeith; Mr. James S. Paterson, Colin by DumfrieS, one (3 tons), assigned by Urr Transport Co., Palnackie; and Messrs. D. and D. Transport, Dundee, one (3 tons), assigned by Little Strickland Trading Co., Ltd., Little Strickland, Penrith, NORTH-WEST

, Eight lorries (251 tons) have been taken over in a first purchase by Fearings Transport, Ltd., 76-80 Barracks Road, Burn ley, They were assigned by Mr. M. F. Hall, Burnley.

J. C. Ash and Co., Ltd., 105a Eeclesall Road South, Sheffield, 11, whose purchase of on vehicle was reported in The Commercial Motor on June 4, have had a tender accepted for a unit in list 8. They now have four vehicles running under special A licences. The directors of J. C. Ash and Co., are Mr. J. H. Morton and Mr. R. B. Morton.

An unspecified purchase, based at Harrogate, made by Mr. L. A. Walter (East Dorset Transport), Station Road, Weft Moors, Dorset, has been assigned to Mr, F. Baxter, '28 Skipton Road, Harrogate, Who has made it over to R. E. Marston (Otley), Ltd., 'North Street, Otley.

Messrs. 1. E. and C. H. Rooke, Islington,. Tadeaster, who have successfully tendered for five lorries,' have 'made over two" to Mr. E. Maeer, SheriStone, Warren Avenue, Knottingley, and one to Mr. F. Hensby, Whitley Farm, Netherton, near Wakefield.

Mr. 0. WestwOod, 45 Kemp's Lane, Beceles, has added two vehicles (6"totis), based at Becclea (unit 5413), to the one le Purchased. last year (The Commercial Motor; August' 6).

.0ther repeat purchasers who have been successful -with tenders for units in list 8 are: Mr. D. C. (leater, •Boxted Garage, Boxted, Colchester, and O. G. Barnard and SODS. Ltd., Stowmarket. Mr. Geater has bought Fordham unit 5597, commis

ing two articulated vehicles (5.-tons), and Ipswich unit 4851, one articulated vehicle (21 tons). Four vehicles (11 tons), based at Beccles (unit 5414), and one (5 tons) at Bury St. Edmunds (unit 3703), have gone to Bamards.

Another successful tenderer is Mr. J. V. Snell, 590 London Road, Westcliff-on-Sea, who has bought North Walsham unit 5061, comprising two lorries (6 tons).

SOUTH WALES

Entress Transport, Ltd., St. Mary Street, Swansea, who already have four vehicles, have acquired another 11 with a total unladen weight of 841 tons. Five of these (40 tons) have been transferred to Dunvant Transport, Ltd., Morfa Works, Llanelly. Hills Transport (Dinas Powis), Ltd., New House, Dinas Powis, have taken over another three lorries (201 tons). One of these (61 tons) was sold to them by Grove Garages (Pcnarth), Ltd., Penarth, and the , remainder by Mr. J. L Lovell, Gilwern House, Pontllanfraith, Mon. Mr. Lovell is left with three lorries (191tons). Messrs. E. W. S. and L S. Hayman (Valley Carriers), Grove Garage, Grove Terrace, Penarth, have bought two more

lorries (7 tons). They have also transferred an articulated outfit (5/ tons) to Mr. Douglas Speck, 101 Ewenny Road, Bridgend, Glam.

SOUTHERN AREA

T. Hunt and Sons, Ltd., Southampton, who already have a number of vehicles running under special A licences, have acquired 'another two. They have an uniaden weight of 51 tons.

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES

Four units based at Battle have been sold. Two, each comprising four lorries (10 tons), have gone to Mr. S. C. Willingham, 124 Turkey Road, Bexhill-on-Sea. The units were 4084 and 4085. Unit 4081 has been acquired by Messrs. Weston and Huxford, Station Road, Robertsbridge, Sussex. It also consisted of four vehicles (10 tons). The remaining Battle unit, 4086, comprising one vehicle (3 tons), has been bought by Mr. E. Masters. 31 Manor Close, Southwick, Sussex. All are new purchasers.

Five vehicles, including a van (12 tons), and a spare, have gone to Mr. F. W. King, Greenwich South Street, London, S.E.10. They made up' Greenwich unit 5153. Rochester unit 4541, comprising three vehicles (9 tons), has been sold to Mr. W. E. Haselden, 66 Cooling Road, Finsbury. Rochester, and Aldingbourne unit 5144—two vehicles (5 tons)—to Messrs. W. Thwaites and Son, 33 Mighell Street, Brighton.

Mr. J. Pankhurst, until recently superintendent of the East Hoathly depot of British Road Services, which closed down last Friday, has bought a number of vehicles based there and is understood to be planning to operate them from East Hoathly. • Mr. Pankhurst joined the former owners of the depot, Messrs. Routh and Stevens, in 1924. His predecessor as depot superintendent under B.R.S. was Capt. E. L. Routh. one of the founders of the original concern, who served in this capacity from the time his business was acquired by the British Transport Commission in April, 1950, until he retired in January, 1952.

Mr. L. J. Palmer, Gillingham, Kent, has bought two lorries, each of 3 tons, and assigned one each to Palmer's Transport Co., Gillingham, and Messrs. Coulling Bros., Lehharn.
