-DIE Road Transport Executive J. has announced that as at

January 1, between 450 and 500 notices of acquisition had been served on road freight undertakings.

Over 20 vehicles will be acquired by the Road Transport Executive on January 24, when it takes over the business of Aber Carriers, Ltd., Vulcan Works, Salop Road, Welshpool. It is understood that the present managing director, Mr. Glyn Jenkin Jones, will continue to manage the business on behalf of the Executive.

In his New Year message to the staff, the chairman of the British Transport Commission, Sir Cyril Hurcomb, said that since January I. 1948, the Corn mission had taken over 403 road transport undertakings, with 17,800 passenger and goods vehicles.

Sir Cyril disclosed that the earnings of the railways were falling .far short of expectations. When the railways raised their fares and . charges . in October, • 1947, it was estimated that these _increases alone would have to earn an additional,£65,000,000 a year to make ends meet.

The 'final results for 1948. could not be known for some time yet, but at• the end of November the railways' additional earnings had reached Only 04,000,000. This short fall was bound to have a serious effect on the Commission's finances generally.
