ON the occasion of its annual dinner, held a few days ago, Coventons, Ltd., of 112a, Junction Road, Tipper Holloway, London, N.19, provided its employees and visitors with a most enjoyable evening.
Mr. J. B. Farrington, general manager, revealed, during a speech containing some interesting statistics, the fact that the company's vehicles had, during the year 1929, run 552,383 miles for Kearley and Tonge, Ltd., the widely known concern of provision merchants, and 60,588 miles for the Cities Service Oil Co. During the year an average of 4.35 miles was covered on a gallon of petrol, that figure being .29 better than that of the previous year. It reflects considerable credit upon the drivers, the mainten ance staff and the supplier of the fuel that a further .69 mile is now obtained on a gallon of petrel than in the first year's running. Put into another form, this results in an annual saving of 28,282 gallons of petrol or, with fuel at its present price, £1,546.
Mr. Parrington continued :—" Looking back over the past seven years find that we have completed 3,005,000 miles, with Scammell six-wheelers, for Kearley and Tonge, Ltd. During 1929 we estimate that we carried about £3,000,000 worth of groceries, our claims for losses and damage amounting to only £8 16s. 5d. During the whole seven years that we have worked for Kearley and Tonge, Ltd., we must have delivered easily £15,000,000 worth of groceries." A remark that was
loudly applauded by the drivers Was one to the effect that, in the history of the company, there had not been a case in which there was the slightest suspicion of pilfering by the employees.
During the evening Mr. Farringtoa was presented with a testimonial and art inscribed gold watch, these having been subscribed for by members of the 'staff.
Mr. J. Hartley, a representative of Kearley and Tonge, Ltd., in response to the toast of "The Guests," , spoke highly of the work that was carried out for his company by Coventons, Ltd. He pointed ont that 'part of the success of the International Stores was due to the well-organized system of transport, in which Coventons, Ltd., had always played a prominent part.
