A Six-cylinder Republic Model with a Long or Short Frame a n d Hydraulically

Operated Brakes

IN October last year the first of the new Republic chassis arrived in this country; it was the Eleettnaster, for 30-cwt. loads. Now we are able to announce that the next larger model has been received by Republic Service and Spare Parts Co., Ltd., 20 Peterborough Road, London, .S.W.6.

The new arrival is a two-tonner known as model D1, with a wheelbast

of 12 ft. or, as the DAL with a wheelbase of 13 ft. 9 ins. The dimensions common. to both types are: Width of frame, 2 ft. 8 ins.; track (front), 4 ft. 10* ins., track (rear), 5 ft. 11 in.;ground clearance, 8i ins.; tyres, 30 ins. by 5 ins. standard, 32 ins. by 6 ins. optional extra, or 34 ins. by 7 ins. (single) on rear wheels at additional cost.

A 9-ft. body is recommended for the short chassis or an 11-ft. one for the

longer machine. The turning circles are 56 ft. and GO ft respectively, whilst the chassis prices are £465 and £485. The long-wheelbase chassis forms ' a suitable foundation for a 20-seater passenger-carrying vehicle.

Se far as the chassis specifications are concerned the following remarks apply to both types Except for a slight outsweep at the dash line the frame is parallel in plan and horizontal in elevation. There are four cross-members ; three of them are gusseted, whilst the front one carries the forward end of the engine; the two rear mounting points of the engine-gearbox unit are spring loaded, brackets on the • frame carrying the bearer aims of the crankcase. On the off-side frame member is the fuel tank, from which liquid is drawn by a vacuum tank on the dash. The spare rim is carried in a cradle at the rear.

springs are used for • both axles, the rear ones incorporating five-leaf auxiliaries. The front axle is a drop-forged 1-section member, whilst the rear axle is of the banjo type enclosing bevels• and fully floating shafts ; final-drive ratios of 5.83 or 6,8 to 1 are offered.

An L-headed, six-eylindered sidevalve engine is employed ; the bore and stroke are 31 ins. and 41 ins. respectively, giving a displacement of 224 cubic ins. At 2,500 r.p.m. the output is 59 b.h.p. The cylinder head is detachable, as is the cylinder block. Pressure lubrication is employed. The distributor for the coil-ignition set is mounted above the cylinder head.

On the off side of the engine are situated the dynamo and water pump, with tandem drive, whilst the starter is spigoted into the crankcase at the rear. The pump is bolted direct to the cylinder block.. On the near side are the manifolds—with a hot spot—the Pump-type carburetter with an air cleaner and the flexible exhaust pine leading to the silencer. The electric equipment is of Auto-Lite make. The clutch is of the dry multi-plate type.

Mounted in unit fashion is the fourspeed gearbox, which gives overall ratios of 38, 23, and 12 to 1 on the indirect speeds. A single-cylintlered air compressor for tyre inflation is mounted on the near side of the box. Transinission is by a two-piece propeller shaft with mechanical universal joints. Hydraulic operation is used for the four-wheel brakes, which are of the internal-exnanding type.
