Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• A three-year block-release training scheme for HMI technicians has been launched by the RTITB. Participating companies will pay £17 to £24 (including YT supplement) per apprentice per week for a package that includes a training programme, help in recruitment and selection (including aptitude tests Ind interviewing if required), skills assessment and examinations, Currently 100 apprentices from, among others, BRS, Transfleet and Wincanton Distribution are on a pilot scheme.

John Parry from BRS says the programme will help his company to offer uniform appren ticeship training throughout the various regions.

The 43 weeks of block release will be carried out at Bristol, Leicestershire or Edinburgh (accommodation costing £29 to £34 per week). At the completion of the course students will have gained City and Guilds 383 Level 3 or BTEC National Certificate for Technicians; 17 RTITB module certificates and the National Craft Certificate.

Modules cover exhaust, cooling and injection systems, service scheduling, single and hub reduction axles, gearbox, clutch, steering, engines, brakes and electrical systems. By selecting the relevant modules the apprenticeship can be tailored to a company's needs.

In addition, advice about onthe-job training will be given and, if required, the RTITB will help with recruitment including aptitude testing and interviewing. All skills assessment and examination fees are included in the weekly charge.

Ian Benzie, RTITB's national contract manager, says there are several companies with one apprentice on the pilot scheme and that it is as applicable to small workshops as it is for BRS. To help companies retain their staff the RTITB has arranged a seven-year bond that is forfeited if the employee leaves.
