LAST Saturday, United Automobile Services Ltd. placed in service the first of its new fleet of 36-ft. rear-engined coaches for the Tyne-Tees-Thames services. The route followed was via Doncaster arid Stamford—the usual day service, although the vehicles are also designed for motorway operation and arc fitted with the Gardner 6HLX engine of 150 b.h.p., governed to 68 m.p.h.

The United night service is now split between the eastern route and the MI motorway, and a complete revision of schedules is before the Traffic Commissioners to take advantage of the performance of the new coaches. Refreshment stops are being changed at the same time. where necessary, to give the highest standard of passenger comfort. and in this

direction it is interesting to note that only 43 seats are fitted in the new vehicles (compared with the standard 47) to give passengers ample leg room.

The coaches are based on the new Bristol RE design with Eastern Coach Works bodies, described in The Commercial Motor of October 25 last year. Features include fixed glazing, with individually controlled ventilation nozzles beneath the luggage racks, wide windows and an exhaust boiler supplying an enlarged front heater and two underseat heaters towards the rear of the body. Five of these coaches have now been delivered; another five will enter service during the summer and further additions will provide a fleet of 20 to this design by the end of 1965.
