CITY AND SUBURBAN CARRIERS, LTD., held its fifth annual staff dinner at the London Tavern, Pen. church Street, London, B.C., on January 28th last, when Mr. L. Barter, the managing director of the company, occupied the chair. In all about 130 persons attended the function, which was made the more noteworthy by reason of the presentation of a i'onld watch, suitably inscribed, to Mr. G. P. Tayler, late director, to mark the appreciation of his services to the company. Furthermore, two of the City and Suburban drivers were each the recipients of a cheque for 16, this being the award made by the company in respect of a freedom-from-accidents scheme which it has evolved. Under this system each driver is credited or debited with 10s. each month, according to whether the vehicle in his charge be involved in an accident on the road or not. The two men who received the full award each had a clean sheet in this direction

throughout the whole of 1927. The scheme is undoubtedly a direct incentive to careful driving.

This must be considered a creditable performance, when it is borne in mind that the company's fleet of vehicles is at work, for the most part, in busy traffic areas, in which congestion is often rife. Actually, its radius of collection and delivery extends for a distance of 15 miles from London, two deliveries per day being guaranteed within a radius of ten miles of the Metropolis and one delivery per day beyond that distance up to the limit of the working area.

A brief review of the company's history is sufficient to indicate the progressive ideals with which those who control its destinies are imbued. It was formed in the early part of 1919, when two motorvans and a horsed vehicle represented the extent of the transport fleet. To-day 92 motors are in regular use, and the last horse has long since been retired. Over 50 vehicles in the fleet are Ford 1-ton chassis, adapted by the use of the Edge extension unit to carry SO-cwt. and 2-ton loads, whilst there are three others-2-tonners----arranged for forward control. The other machines are mostly of a carrying capacity of 1-ton.

The aggregate weekly mileage of the fleet is about 17,000, and, although spread over 92 vehicles this does not represent a big mileage per vehicle, the circumstances of use must not be overlooked, and there is little question that every unit is hard worked. During last year the fleet transported just short of 2,000s00 parcels, quite a proportion of the goods being textiles collected from a number of important city business houses.

The speeches at the dinner were con-F. , mendably short and the tenor of them reflected the reasons for the success of the company and for theamicable relations which exist between it and those • concerns which rely largely upon the effieient transport service which can certainly be said to be given by City and Suburban Carriers, Ltd.
