Operators considering multimodal transport can now

apply for new DfT grants. Chris Tindall reports.

THE DEPARTMENT for Transport (DTI') is now accepting applications for three grant schemes worth a total of £25.5m which are designed to help operators shift freight off the roads.

The schemes, which will operate under the Sustainable Distribution Fund, are intended to minimise congestion, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, make better use of the transport infrastructure and cut noise and disturbance from freight movements.

The schemes are the Freight Facilities Grant (FFG): the Rail Environmental Benefit Procurement Scheme (REPS); and the Waterborne Freight Grant (WFG). The FFG will offset the capital cost of providing rail and water facilities: the REPS and the WFG will offset the costs of running freight on rail and water respectively.

A DfT spokesman says the first round of bidding for the REPS and the WFG will close on 12 December.A follow-up second-bid round closes on 9 January 2007.

Applications for the FFG must be received by 31 January 2007.

The spokesman adds: "There'snotan unlimited fund, but we expect to be able to support a great number of applications. All applications that we receive in time will he considered.

"We want to reduce the impact of moving goods around the country," he adds.

Further information on each of the schemes and how to apply for grants can be found on the Freight Logistics section of the DIT website: www.dft.gov.uk
